For those wishing to remain at their seats for communion, individual kits will be available on the table in the gathering space for you to pick up as you enter. After the elements are blessed, worshippers can commune at their seats at the direction of the pastor. PSALM 30
A Psalm. A Song at the dedication of the temple. Of David.
I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up,
and did not let my foes rejoice over me.
O Lord my God, I cried to you for help,
and you have healed me.
O Lord, you brought up my soul from Sheol,
restored me to life from among those gone down to the Pit.
Sing praises to the Lord, O you his faithful ones,
and give thanks to his holy name.
For his anger is but for a moment;
his favour is for a lifetime.
Weeping may linger for the night,
but joy comes with the morning.
As for me, I said in my prosperity,
‘I shall never be moved.’
By your favour, O Lord,
you had established me as a strong mountain;
you hid your face;
I was dismayed.
To you, O Lord, I cried,
and to the Lord I made supplication:
‘What profit is there in my death,
if I go down to the Pit?
Will the dust praise you?
Will it tell of your faithfulness?
Hear, O Lord, and be gracious to me!
O Lord, be my helper!’
You have turned my mourning into dancing;
you have taken off my sackcloth
and clothed me with joy,
so that my soul may praise you and not be silent.
O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever.

PSALM 23
A Psalm of David.
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff—
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.

Food for the Flock: Fourth Sunday of Pentecost
/The Message
30Again Jesus said, "What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground.
32Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in its shade."
Bunnies, rainbows and grape juice! Now, you may ask - what in the world do all three of these have in common? They are all small gifts that each reminded me how active and alive God is in this amazing world we live.
These last few weeks have been extremely busy and hectic for us in the Richter household. Just transitioning from school to summer schedules is usually busy enough, but this year we are not only preparing and organizing events for our 14 confirmation students but we are also parents of one of those students who will be affirming their faith. So with dual roles we have been busy preparing for Rebekah’s confirmation and trying to get our house in order after some much needed repairs and upgrades to our home in order to accommodate the extra guests and company we will have in our home. On top of this we have been planning for VBS, finalizing details for hiring two more staff positions at All Shepherds, leading Bible studies and funeral, wedding and renewal of vows services, trying to get ready to leave for a visit to Nebraska next week and trying to keep up with phone calls, prayers and those just in the hospital. Needless to say, it has been a busy few weeks for us.
In busyness, it is often easy for me to get in such a hurry that I can easily miss what is right in front of me. I am thinking so much about what I need to get done that I forget to take time to stop and pay attention to what is going on around me. I am going through the motions to check off the lists I have and forget about pretty much everything else going on around me. It is easy to disconnect from myself, my family and even God.
Yet, as Jesus reminds us today in the scripture above, the kingdom of God thankfully is not dependent on me or any other human activity for that matter. It is always there – often in small, what appears insignificant ways that when we actually stop to reflect on and process what has happened we are reminded of God’s amazing promises and presence that is always with us. Small events, experiences, moments that grow and lead to great revelations of God’s life and love for us.
So – how did I experience God through bunnies, rainbows and grape juice? Each of these in the past few weeks have caused me to stop from the busyness going on around me and take a moment to live and be present and thank God for this beautiful world we get to live in.
The bunnies appeared when my family finally had an evening to weed the front flower bed at our house. One of the plants was out of control with weeds and I decided it was time for this flower to go. I went to pull it from the ground – only to discover that it was the home of five little baby bunnies. The bunnies caused quite a stir that evening, bringing neighbors and walkers to take notice and for us to take some time to connect to the community around us. The rainbow came following a drive to Athens to meet my parents and pick up Jonathan. I had had a packed full and busy day. We were at a gas station when the rainbow appeared. Workers and strangers from all over gathered around to admire and appreciate its beauty and presence. And finally, last night I had went to Wal-Mart to buy grape juice for communion for the confirmation crossover event scheduled for this weekend; one of the workers looked in my cart as I was checking out and noticed the grape juice. He commented to me that it looked like communion. When I responded that it was for communion, he spent the next five minutes witnessing to me about the importance of taking communion and remembering Jesus every day of our lives.
Three small seeds that reminded me of God’s always present, always amazing, always growing movement and action in our lives. What small seeds have been planted near you? Where do you see God’s kingdom breaking into your life in small ways that grow into much greater significance and meaning.
Join us for worship this Sunday and allow those seeds to be revealed to us. Celebrate with us that there are 14 students in our confirmation program who because of small seeds of God’s love, kindness and joy planted in their lives have the desire to affirm their faith and commit to following the Lord. May your eyes be open this day to these small seeds of God’s never ending love that are constantly growing and active all around us.
In Christ’s love and service always,
Pastor Wendy

Food for the Flock: Third Sunday of Pentecost
/The Message
“For the Lord is good; his steadfast loves endures, and his faithfulness to all generations.”
Psalm 100:5
Crescendoing to the transformative moment of the musical, Phinneas Barnum sits hunched over on a barstool. He feels sorry for himself. A fire has recently destroyed the building that housed his circus. He has betrayed the trust of his employees. The star of his nationwide tour has quit. His wife has just left him due to some circumstances within his control. Is this how it will all end? No! This is the beginning.
This is not the end but the beginning of best to come. For he breaks out into the song, From Now On.
“…Cause from then, rubble
What remains
Can only be what’s true
If all was lost
There’s more I gained
‘Cause it led me back
To you
From now on
These eyes will not be blinded by the lights
From now on
What’s waited ‘til tomorrow starts tonight
Tonight
Let this promise in me start
Like an anthem in my heart
From now on
From now on…”
Barnum’s musical epiphany unintentionally echoes the hymnic promise of the Psalm. Steadfast love from another never ceases. For him, his wife, his daughter and the performers always loved him for who he was. His hard times led him back to them. For us, God and God’s people always loves us for who we are. In all times, this leads us back to God. In God, the best is yet to come.
In God, the best comes right now. Whatever you face as you read these words, God is with you right now. If it is the afternoon, God is with you right now. If it is the evening, God is with you right now. If it is morning, right now God is with you. From now on, never forget it! God is with you! God loves you!
You are loved for who you are! Never forget it! Come be reminded of it again this week at All Shepherds Lutheran Church. Worship with us in person at 8:00AM and 9:30AM. Worship on our Youtube Channel at 9:30AM. Worship with us in the Chapel in the Words at 11:11am. From now on, what is always there is God’s love for you.
Shepherding the Shepherds,
Pastor Craig

Food for the Flock: Second Sunday of Pentecost
/The Message
Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or take the path that sinners tread,
or sit in the seat of scoffers;
but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law they meditate day and night.
He is like a tree planted by streams of
water, which yields its fruits in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.
Psalm 1:1,3
This last year, I have been helping with Jonathan’s cub scout den as an assistant. This week, the den leader of our group asked if I could lead the meeting because he had to be out of town on business. It just happened that the lesson was to discuss what does it mean in the scout oath when we say, “On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God…”
What does this mean? What is our duty to God? As six different 7-year-old boys and their parents gathered around to wrestle with this very big question, I realized I needed to first begin by asking them, “Who is God?” So, in order to begin this conversation, I encouraged the boys to start by drawing their answers to this very important question by using sidewalk chalk. Each child responded in his own unique way – one drew a giant angel with powerful hands that made a chicken; another drew a giant creature with lots of legs because God holds the whole world and must be huge and need lots of legs to carry the world around, another drew an old man with a white beard, one drew Noah’s ark because it is his favorite Bible story since it tells us how God saves us and all the animals and finally another drew a giant heart because he said, “God is love.”
As we dove into this question about God, we circled back to what is our duty to God. I have never really thought about this question this way before. What is our duty to God? How do we show respect and honor to God? The scripture constantly points us back to God’s law. As we faithfully, follow God’s law to worship, to love, to respect others, we are honoring God.
The Psalmist reminds us today of the happiness that comes from doing this. It is often easy to look at laws and rules as that which restricts us, but God’s laws are not that way. Following God’s laws actually frees us to live.
I have to confess that Cub scouts was one of those things that I was relieved to not have when everything shut down last year. Don’t get me wrong, I think it is an amazing program with great teaching. It was just one of those things way out of my comfort zone. I have never camped overnight or really enjoyed fishing or pinewood derbies or even selling popcorn. It was way out of what I was used to doing. And yet, it was the one thing that Jonathan kept asking me about. He really missed it and wanted to get back. At one point this last summer, he even proudly told a stranger that I was a cub scout leader. So when someone reached out to me, knowing how happy it has made Jonathan and how much he enjoys it, I got us back involved.
Sometimes, faith is that way, it takes us out of our comfort and what we know and understand, but as we take that path and walk on it more and more, we see the happiness and good that it leads to. The more that we work at our duty to God, the more that we realize the duty is not as painful as we thought but actually life giving. And before we know it, we are being fed and strengthened like a tree next to water.
So, this Sunday, join us in worship whether in person, on Zoom, through live streaming and let us honor our own duty to God and see just how this path leads us to happiness, meaning and life.
In Christ’s love and service,
Pastor Wendy

Food for the Flock: Pentecost Sunday
/The Message
Transitions are difficult. Times such as these bring brief endings for one’s life. Moments in which a person grieves what will be missed moving forward. The end of an old normal giving way to something new can easily cause an uncertainty to rise within oneself.
The challenge of a transition in not limited to an ending in one’s life however. These markers in one’s life bring about new beginnings in one’s life too. Future possibilities in which a person can easily be overwhelmed seem to abound. Anticipation one second can give way to excitement the next second. Quite literally, the unknown captures our attention.
Our family faces two of these transitions next week. Nathanael will finish his final day of elementary school and Rebekah will finish her last day of middle school next Thursday. Our whole family will leave an old normal behind and will prepare to have a child in elementary school, middle school and high school at the same time. Saying goodbye and preparing to juggle all three different schedules leaves me tongue-tied to say the least.
Based on the message from Olentangy Orange Middle School (pictured above) that came into our email’s on Wednesday of this past week, I am not alone for being at a loss for words. Looking closely at the picture makes it clear, the school is not quite sure what to say about the transition either.
Okay! Okay! Okay! All jokes aside, transitions often leave us tongue-tied and at a loss for words. So something needs to bring us together as one as we transition into new days. For our family, it was a different browser understanding the gobbly-gook. Our i-phone browsers brought up the following message to clear things up.
Both pictures capture the moment of Day of Pentecost. On the one hand, nothing made sense anymore for the early believers. On the other hand, the early believers needed something to unify them. Their transition is captured in these words.
“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.”
Acts 2:1-4 NRSV
Still grieving and unsure of what lied ahead in their future, the early people of faith gathered in the intimacy of one place sorting out the next days. Anticipating the possibilities, they were struggling stepping forward in faith. When all of the sudden, the Holy Spirit arrived and cleared up the confusion. They and those gathered could hear each of them speaking in the native language of each. They could hear the good news in their native tongue. The Holy Spirit brought them together as one as they transitioned into this new day as believers in the crucified and risen one.
What Good News for them on that day and for us in these days! Transitioning from a time apart due to the global Covid-19 pandemic back into gatherings as we hone our approach to address the pandemic will require communication and conversation, but the Holy Spirit will always go with us as we share the good news of Jesus Christ together.
Experience the next step in the transition with us. At 8AM and 9:30AM, worship with us inside. Live streaming and Zoom Worship will take place at 9:30AM. At 11:11AM, bring your lawn chair and worship with us in the outdoor chapel. As we take this next step together, the Holy Spirit is with us.

Food for the Flock: Sixth Sunday of Easter
/I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2: 20
In this series, we hear about the early birth of the church as followers of Jesus travel around to proclaim the Good News. We are taught that we are saved by faith, and are all one in the Body of Christ. As we prepare to travel again and return to more and more parts of our daily lives, we too share the Good News far and wide, in many new ways.

You are asked to continue wearing a mask to comply with the ongoing State regulations. We would be meeting in Scrambler’s private room, away from the general population. If you plan on attending, you must let Bill Barker know by Saturday May 15. Hope to see all of you there!

We now receive more than twice the monthly contributions via Tithe.ly than before the pandemic. Thanks to all members of the congregation for your continued financial support of the All Shepherds ministries during 2020. For additional information on Tithe.ly please contact Becky Lickfelt.

Worshipping online but want a little more connectedness to other church members? Join our AWE-some Zoom Worship Group on Sunday mornings! Our Zoom Worship room is open every Sunday at 9:15 AM. This allows time for us to greet one another before worship and then reconnect to discuss the pastor’s sermon after worship. Occasionally the pastor will even stop by and discuss the message with us. You can leave when the service is over or stay for the discussion and social time. Try it out! We’d love to have you join us.
Scripture Readings this week: Psalm 30; Luke 24: 13-35
AT HOME COMMUNION

ELECTRONIC GIVING
In 2020, All Shepherds received more than $81,000 in contributions using Tithe.ly. That is more than 20% of all 2020 contributions. Tithe.ly started as an alternative approach to giving, but during the pandemic, our members found it to be a very convenient and reliable method to financially support All Shepherds. We now receive more than twice the monthly contributions via Tithe.ly than before the pandemic. Thanks to all members of the congregation for your continued financial support of the All Shepherds ministries during 2020. For additional information on Tithe.ly please contact Becky Lickfelt.
GIVING QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“Beware! Don’t be greedy for what you don’t have. Real life is not measured by how much we own.”
Luke 12:15
DONATING SECURITIES
